Zimbabwe has reported an outbreak of measles among children and adolescents in the eastern district of Mutasa, Manicaland Province which has killed 14 of them, the Ministry of Health and Child Care said Wednesday. A total of 72 cases have been reported to date since April 10 when the outbreak was first detected, the ministry said in a statement. "Of the reported cases, only nine had been vaccinated while the remainder had not been vaccinated or their vaccination status is unknown," the ministry said. The ministry said it had started a mass vaccination campaign in the district targeting the 6 months to 15 years age group, regardless of their vaccination status, in a bid to control the outbreak. "Health workers are carrying out an intensive door-to-door education campaign against this disease. The Ministry of Health and Child Care reassures the public that the situation is currently under control and therefore they should not panic," the ministry said. It urged all provinces in the country to be on high alert, and those attending church gatherings, especially in Manicaland Province to be on the lookout for suspected measles among their children.
