The Eastern Cape police have launched a manhunt for four men who allegedly shot and killed four people in Bethelsdorp, Gqeberha shortly after midnight on Thursday, 12 May.
NINE PEOPLE TARGETED IN GQEBERHA SHOOTING
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said nine people were reportedly sitting in a Gqeberha garage – alongside others – when two vehicles pulled up and stopped at the house’s front gate. “Four unidentified male suspects allegedly covering faces, alighted from their vehicles and entered the gate. “They are alleged to have separated the group of people who were gathered in the place and started shooting at the nine,” said Kinana. Four people died at the scene, while five survivors – aged between 29 and 31 – were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding the mass shooting are under investigation – four cases of murder and five attempted murders have been opened and no arrests have been made thus far. The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene activated a 72-hour mobilisation plan to track down and arrest the four suspects.
