Sudanese army forces repelled a new attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the city of Babanusa in West Kordofan State on Monday, amid fierce fighting that has gripped the three Kordofan states for days.
The clashes come as part of the wider conflict between the army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023 following disputes over the unification of the military institution. The war has since left tens of thousands dead and displaced around 13 million people.
Through its operations in the Kordofan region, the army is seeking to reassert control over Darfur, where all major cities have fallen to the RSF following the group’s capture of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, on 26 October last year.
A military source told Anadolu Agency, on condition of anonymity, that the army’s 22nd Infantry Division had repelled the RSF assault on Babanusa using both heavy and light weaponry. According to the source, army forces pushed back the attackers, inflicting significant losses in personnel and equipment.
