Millions in Haiti are going hungry as armed groups tighten control over large parts of the country, according to the latest UN-backed IPC report. The IPC is a UN-backed index measuring hunger and malnutrition in global hotspots,
About 5.7 million people in Haiti are facing food insecurity, with 1.9 million at emergency levels and 3.8 million in crisis.
The worst period is expected between March and June 2026, when the lean season hits and more than half the population could struggle to eat.
Violence, displacement, and a collapsing economy have destroyed livelihoods. Farmers must now negotiate with gangs for access to land and share their crops and many small businesses have shut down, leaving families with no income.
These conditions increase the likelihood of sexual violence, spread of diseases such as cholera, and psychological distress for the displaced, who already lack adequate access to safe water, food and proper healthcare.
The IPC warns that overcrowding, poor sanitation, and disease outbreaks are worsening the situation and calls for urgent humanitarian aid and stronger social protection programmes.
