The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) announced today that samples from a licensed pig farm in Wong Nai Tun, Yuen Long, have tested positive for the African Swine Fever (ASF) virus.
An AFCD spokesperson reported, “Eleven pig samples were taken from the farm, and at least three tested positive for ASF. As per our contingency plan, we have suspended all transportation of pigs from the affected farm until further notice. The AFCD is also arranging for the culling of pigs as a precaution.”
The spokesperson emphasised the urgency of addressing positive cases, stating, “ASF is extremely lethal to pigs. If not contained, it could lead to significant losses for pig farmers and the industry. We have promptly notified all local pig farmers about this incident and advised them to contact the AFCD immediately if they observe any health abnormalities in their pigs.”
In addition, the AFCD is conducting inspections at three pig farms within a three-kilometre radius of the infected farm, collecting samples for ASF testing. Movements of pigs on these farms have also been suspended as a precaution. So far, there have been no reports of abnormalities from farms outside this zone.
The AFCD is maintaining heightened surveillance to detect any abnormal health conditions in pigs and to identify potential infections early. Monitoring of nearby wild pig populations will also increase. The department is keeping pig farmers informed through text message groups about the latest ASF developments and preventive measures.
Importantly, the spokesperson clarified that ASF is not a zoonotic disease and does not pose any risk to human health. “Thoroughly cooked pork remains safe for consumption, and the public need not be concerned,” he assured.
To bolster industry vigilance, the AFCD recently held a seminar for pig farmers, outlining specific preventive measures and biosecurity practices against ASF. Furthermore, the AFCD has released guidelines to help farmers recognise clinical signs of ASF for early detection and reporting.
This incident will not disrupt the operations of local slaughterhouses or the overall supply of live pigs. Since June 2019, a daily clearance protocol has been in place, ensuring that live pigs are slaughtered within 24 hours of arrival at the Sheung Shui and Tsuen Wan slaughterhouses. These facilities undergo thorough cleaning and disinfection daily to enhance biosecurity and reduce infection risks.
