There has been an explosion outside the garage of a house on the Houthulststraat in the Antwerp district of Merksem. The explosion happened at around 5:30am. The no significant damage was caused and the Antwerp Local Police Service reports that it is not aware of any casualties.
The explosion could be heard some distance away. Police went to the scene and carried out a preliminary investigation. However, as yet no suspect(s) have been apprehended.
Federal police forensics experts have visited the scene of the explosion to gather evidence and the bomb disposal service DOVO has been informed of the incident.
The area around the explosion has been cordoned off and CCTV footage will be examined as part of the investigation. It is as yet unclear whether the explosion was linked to the trade in illegal narcotics.
