Sri Lanka Railways suspended all train services across the country after 6:00 a.m. local time Friday as continuous heavy rainfall and flooding affected several provinces.
Additional General Manager (Operations) Chandrasena Bandara said the decision was taken due to the adverse weather, which has caused rising water levels, blocked tracks, and limited access to key transport points.
The department said train operations will be carried out only for individuals reporting for essential services. Services will remain restricted to the Western Province until the disaster situation subsides.
Sri Lanka Railways General Manager Ravindra Padmapriya said a limited number of trains will be operated from Galle and Chilaw to Colombo Fort to ensure transport for staff engaged in essential duties.
Sri Lanka has experienced severe weather for several days, with heavy rains, floods, and landslides disrupting daily activities and prompting authorities to impose multiple safety measures.
