A fatal head-on collision at Mampong Abuontem on Thursday, December 4, 2025, has claimed the lives of three people and left 30 others injured, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed.
In a statement issued by the GNFS, 26 of the injured victims were treated and discharged, while four others remain in critical condition and are currently receiving medical care at the Mampong Government Hospital. The accident involved a Toyota Coaster minibus (registration number GV 1720-20) from the Ejura Agricultural College and an Opel Astra saloon car (AS 3838 W), which was completely destroyed in the crash. The Mampong Fire Station received a distress call at 17:38 hours, triggering an immediate rescue response led by Leading Fireman Emmanuel Kwami.Upon arrival, rescue personnel found that 26 students, three staff members, and the minibus driver had already been evacuated by ambulance for medical treatment.Tragically, two additional occupants of the Opel Astra later died after rescue, while the driver of the vehicle was found dead at the scene and eventually handed over to the police after being safely extricated from the wreckage.Eyewitnesses revealed that the Opel Astra reportedly lost control while negotiating a curve, veered off its lane, and crashed head-on into the oncoming minibus. The GNFS confirmed that debris from the accident scene was quickly cleared to allow for the smooth flow of traffic. In the aftermath of the crash, the Fire Service has urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, avoid overtaking on curves, and strictly comply with road safety regulations.A GNFS spokesperson described the tragedy as a sobering reminder of the deadly consequences of reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance, particularly on busy and curved roadways.
