The Thai military opened fire on Cambodian troops along the border in Preah Vihear province yesterday afternoon, the Ministry of National Defence reported, prompting urgent calls from Phnom Penh for an immediate halt to the attack and an ASEAN investigation into the incident.Ministry spokeswoman Lieutenant General Maly Socheata said that about 2.15pm yesterday, Thai military forces initiated an assault on Cambodian forces in the Prorlean Thmar area of Choam Kshant district. She noted that Thai soldiers used handguns, B40 machine guns, and 60mm mortars during the incident. Cambodian forces immediately contacted their Thai counterparts to demand an end to the firing, while refraining from retaliating. The Thai military ceased fire at 2.32pm.“During this incident, Cambodian forces did not retaliate at all and are closely monitoring the situation with utmost caution and vigilance,” Lt Gen Socheata said. “At the same time, Cambodia has also informed the ASEAN observer Team (AOT) about this incident and plans to request the AOT to conduct an investigation into this matter to ensure transparency, justice, and accountability.”
But Khaosod English reported that a Thai-Cambodian border clash took place yesterday, at the Phu Pha Lek-Phlan Hin Paet Kon area in Sisaket province. It said the exchange of fire, which started around 2.15pm and involved small arms and a recoilless rifle, lasted about 35 minutes before ending at 2.50pm. It noted that two Thai soldiers were injured.Meanwhile, Prime Minister Hun Manet met yesterday with the Commander-in-Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces, General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, at the Peace Palace.Gen Nizam thanked Cambodia for showing excellent cooperation in facilitating the AOT in carrying out its duties at the border. He affirmed his commitment to supporting peace between Cambodia and Thailand and pledged to act impartially in facilitating the process, according to a post on Mr Hun Manet’s Facebook page.In response, Mr Hun Manet welcomed the Commander-in-Chief and his delegation, highlighting Malaysia’s important role—particularly that of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim—in facilitating the ceasefire on July 28 followed by the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Declaration on October 26.He also expressed appreciation for the active role of Gen Nizam in leading and coordinating the work of the AOT in accordance with the Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire, the spirit of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee meetings, and the provisions of the Joint Declaration.
During the meeting, Mr Hun Manet briefed Gen Nizam on the status and developments regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border issue, emphasising Cambodia’s determination to resolve the dispute peacefully in accordance with the spirit of the Joint Statement, international law, and existing bilateral agreements, conventions, and treaties.Mr Hun Manet on Saturday met with residents of Prey Chan and Chork Chey villages, as well as other villagers from O’Beichoan commune in O’Chrov district in Banteay Meanchey province, and residents of Kamrieng and Boeng Raing communes in Kamrieng district, Battambang province. He expressed his gratitude to the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Administration, the armed forces, and all relevant departments for their efforts in carrying out intervention operations to protect and maintain territorial integrity and ensure public safety. He particularly thanked them for their commitment in addressing the concerns of villagers in Prey Chan and Chork Chey.
“I would like to thank the aunts, uncles and grandmothers of both Chork Chey and Prey Chan villages for your trust, support, and patience as the government fulfils its roles and responsibilities in safeguarding the interests and integrity of our territory,” he said.
