One person was killed, and 18 others were injured, after a pickup truck collided with two school buses.
Troopers responded to a report of a crash involving two school buses and a pickup truck on U.S. Route 89 near Ephraim, Utah, at 8:30 p.m. local time on Friday, Dec. 12, according to a news release from the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP).
The pickup truck was traveling southbound when it went "left of center," per UHP. The two buses were traveling northbound at that same location. The pickup truck "grazed" the first bus and then struck the second bus "head-on."
The first bus carried approximately 19 students, and there were no reported injuries. The second bus contained 17 students, plus the driver. All 18 passengers were taken to a nearby hospital with "varying injuries," per UHP. Two of them were in critical condition and flown by air ambulance for medical treatment.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 43-year-old male, died from his injuries at the crash scene. "Fatigued driving is being suspected as the cause of the crash," UHP said.
The two school buses were with Wasatch Academy, a college-preparatory boarding school in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, per Fox 13 Salt Lake City.
The school issued a statement on Saturday, Dec. 13, confirming that Friday's accident involved two of its buses.
"There were no student or faculty fatalities," the school said. "Several members of the school community were injured and received or are continuing to receive medical care. Families have been notified. One fatality has been reported in the other vehicle, and we extend our sincere condolences to those affected."
"The school has activated trauma support services, adjusted academic schedules, and is prioritizing student safety, care, and the well-being of our community," they added.
KUTV reported that Wasatch Academy sent an email to parents early on Saturday morning, stating that two students and one faculty member remained hospitalized.
