Honolulu Emergency Services responded to multiple fireworks-related incidents with at least five injuries, including to a 7-year-old girl, while Honolulu police made at least two fireworks-related arrests over the New Year’s holidays.At about 10:35 p.m. Wednesday, paramedics treated the girl at a Nana Place address in Kaneohe. She had “burns to her extremities” and was taken in serious condition to a hospital, EMS said.At 12:10 a.m. today, EMS responded to a Liula Street address, also in Kaneohe where paramedics treated three patients for injuries from a “suspected fireworks blast.”A 63-year-old woman had a traumatic injury to her abdomen and a 65-year-old woman suffered a traumatic injury to both lower extremities. They were both taken in serious condition to a hospital. A man in his 60s sustained a minor injury and declined transport to a hospital, EMS said.And at 12:14 a.m., paramedics responded to firework injury on Waipio Point Access Road. A 48-year-old man with a head injury was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
The Honolulu Police Department, meanwhile, said officers responded to 592 calls for service regarding fireworks violations around the island between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. today and arrested two people for fireworks violations.HPD said a full summary of citations issued and arrests made will be released in conjunction with the State Department of Law Enforcement on Monday.The injuries and arrests come at a time of step-up enforcement and new state and county laws regulating the use of illegal fireworks in the aftermath of last New Year’s Eve tragedy that killed six people in Aliamanu.
