Local media have been reporting that the health authorities in Niger State, Nigeria have declared a health emergency in response to a suspected diphtheria fatal case in Bida LGA . Unofficial reports indicate other cases in the same area showing diphtheria-like symptoms recently. An RFI has been sent to EpiCore members to collect further details about this event from reliable sources. The EpIcore network has confirmed this event and provided additional details extracted from official communications made available by the local health authorities through their social media channels. Based on this feedback, the Commissioner for Health of Niger State has been notified already on Jan 3, 2026, about a suspected diphtheria outbreak in Efu Lungoyi community, Bida LGA , following the death of an 8-year-old boy and the identification of several additional symptomatic children. All suspected cases have been immediately transferred to the Federal Medical Centre for diagnosis and treatment. In addition, an emergency meeting was held with local health officials, WHO representatives, and epidemiologists with the prompt deployment of rapid response teams who assessed the situation and provided public health interventions. The network informed that immediate actions taken by the authorities included active surveillance and contact tracing to detect further possible cases, and planning for targeted vaccination campaigns. In addition, the community has been sensitized about the importance of routine immunization to prevent diphtheria and other infectious diseases: parents were reminded of their responsibilities under Nigeria's Child Rights Act. The authorities have assured that the outbreak is currently under control. The RFI has been supported with relevant contributions directly quoting the local health authorities involved in the response. This summary may be updated in case of further relevant information provided by the network as lab results are still pending.
