Epidemic hazard

Local media have been reporting that the health authorities in Niger State, Nigeria have declared a health emergency in response to a suspected diphtheria fatal case in Bida LGA . Unofficial reports indicate other cases in the same area showing diphtheria-like symptoms recently. Based on this feedback, the Commissioner for Health of Niger State has been notified already on Jan 3, 2026, about a suspected diphtheria outbreak in Efu Lungoyi community, Bida LGA , following the death of an 8-year-old boy and the identification of several additional symptomatic children. All suspected cases have been immediately transferred to the Federal Medical Centre for diagnosis and treatment.
