Protests against the Trump administration's immigration agenda took place this weekend in New York, Minnesota and across the country, days after ICE officer Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis.
In New York, demonstrators gathered outside of 26 Federal Plaza, where over the past several months, ICE has detained migrants showing up to immigration court. In Minneapolis, hundreds of demonstrators marched peacefully in the streets – demanding that ICE leave their state.
Below-freezing temperatures did not stop hundreds of demonstrators from marching through the streets of Minneapolis. They condemned the ongoing immigration operation in their state following Wednesday’s deadly confrontation.
"It shouldn’t be controversial that we don’t want them in our community," one man told NBC News during Saturday's gathering. A woman in the crowd said, "I was silent before, but I can’t be anymore. They shot a white woman in the face. None of us are safe."
New video shows the aftermath of the shooting from a doorbell camera. Good can be seen slamming her SUV into a row of parked cars after she was shot. Her wife is seen sitting on the sidewalk as she processes what has happened. The department of Homeland Security has sent more than 2,000 ICE agents to Minnesota. NBC News reports more Border Patrol agents are on the way. Earlier Saturday, Minnesota elected officials -- including Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar -- said they were denied access to tour an ICE facility in the Twin Cities.
"What happened today is ICE agents deciding we were no longer allowed to fulfill our constitutional duties," said Omar.
In Lower Manhattan, demonstrators stood outside the federal complex where cameras have captured officers arresting immigrants leaving their court hearings. They chanted with demands like "ICE out of our streets!"
