Three people have died and seven others sustained injuries in a Thursday road crash along the Mbarara-Bushenyi Highway.
The crash, which occurred at about 5pm at Katojjo, involved a bus belonging to Tausi Bus Company (registration number UBA 707AK) and a Toyota Noah (registration number UA 196AY).
Eyewitnesses told Monitor that the collision happened when the Toyota Noah, reportedly travelling from Ishaka towards Mbarara, veered off its lane and rammed into the oncoming bus.
Mr Vicent Agaba, a resident of Katojjo who witnessed the crash, described a chaotic scene.
"The Noah driver was coming from the Ishaka side and was driving to Mbarara then suddenly left his lane and rammed into the speeding bus. The bus driver tried to dodge him, but the Noah driver wasn't stable. Three people died on the spot, and others...survival is now in God's hands," he said.
Another witness, Mr Joseph Ayesiga, said the Noah driver appeared to be driving on the wrong side of the road.
"The bus driver tried to stay on the road, but the Noah driver kept following the bus's path," he said.
Some residents, including Mr Robert Ayebare, suggested that the condition of the road network could have contributed to the crash. Immediate reports suggested that both drivers fled the scene immediately after the crash.
The Greater Bushenyi Police Spokesperson, Mr Apollo Tayebwa, confirmed the fatalities.
"We have confirmed three people died on the spot and we are in deep sorrow with the families that have lost their relatives and pray for the souls of the deceased," he said.
He urged road users to observe traffic regulations.
"We ask motorists to be vigilant whether you are a driver or a pedestrian. Let us follow the rules and regulations that govern road safety to protect our lives," he added.
The injured were rushed to Kabwohe Health Centre IV for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Kampala International University Teaching Hospital for post-mortem examination.
According to the 2024 annual crime report by the Uganda Police Force, about 25 lives are lost daily to murder and road crashes across the country.
Investigations into Thursday's cause of the crash are ongoing, according to police.
