A wolf has mauled five sheep to death in Wincrange in northern Luxembourg and injured another two, the nature administration has confirmed.
The sheep were killed and injured at the end of February. The nature administration commissioned a genetic analysis to find out what animal was behind the attack, which confirmed that it was a wolf.
It is unclear whether the animal is still in Luxembourg or has since moved on, the administration said in a press release.
There have been regular wolf sightings in Luxembourg since 2017, the nature administration said, with packs of wolves roaming the High Fenn nature reserve in neighbouring Belgium. Two wolf pairs call the Belgian Ardennes their home.
While wolves generally avoid contact with humans, they have been seen observing humans from a distance out of curiosity, before retreating.
The nature administration advises the public not to try and feed wolves and not to approach them. If humans cross paths with a wolf, they should not run away as this could risk triggering their hunting instinct.
Humans should wave their arms and shout from a distance to scare off the animal. Should the animal approach, you should throw stones or branches at it, the nature administration advises.
All wolf sighting should be reported to the authorities at wolf@anf.etat.lu, if possible with a picture but only if this does not pose any risk.
