Eastern Mediterranean Sea near island of Kastellorizo, Rhodes Regional Unit, South Aegean Administrative Region

An Estonian border guard vessel on a mission of the European Union border agency Frontex capsized and sank near a Greek island off the coast of Turkey, the Greek coast guard told AFP.
According to the Greek national broadcaster ERT, the Frontex vessel belonged to Estonia. Its crew included three Estonians and one Greek coast guard officer, and the Estonian ambassador to Greece was also on board. Estonia’s current representative in Greece is Karin Rannu.
All those affected were first taken to the health center on the nearby island of Kastellorizo and from there transported by helicopter to a hospital on the island of Rhodes, the newspaper I Kathimeriní reported. According to the newspaper, one of the injured had a head wound.
The coast guard said the accident involving the Frontex vessel did not occur during an operation. The circumstances of the vessel’s capsizing are under investigation, but according to I Kathimeriní, an explosion may have occurred on board.
“The Greek coast guard informed us that they managed to rescue everyone who was on board. I believe there were five people. As far as I understand, at least one person has been injured,” Frontex spokesperson Krzysztof Borowski told AFP.
The mayor of Kastellorizo, Nikos Asvestis, told the ANA news agency that only one person on the vessel was seriously injured. “It is not clear whether the boat hit the seabed, collided with a floating log that drifted from the harbor, or capsized due to an incorrect maneuver,” he said.
