“The Icelandic Meteorological Office’s avalanche monitoring team is focused on this area and developments are currently being closely observed,” said Hlynur Hafberg Snorrason, chief superintendent with the Westfjords police, in an interview with mbl.is regarding an avalanche that fell in Seljalandshlíð this morning. As a precaution, a commercial building in Ísafjörður, where dozens of people work, was evacuated.
Yellow weather warnings are in effect for the area, but Snorrason said the avalanche did not reach the road or pose a threat to buildings.

People urged to monitor updates
“The police carried out the evacuation by contacting key individuals,” the chief superintendent said, adding that both the police and avalanche monitoring teams are now closely tracking the situation.
He emphasized the importance of people paying close attention to weather updates and road conditions, and, when possible, planning travel between regions in accordance with the Road Administration’s service hours.
