Continuous heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and hailstorm, paralyzed life in Abbottabad city and its surrounding areas, as major roads including Mansehra Road and Murree Road were inundated, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides.
According to details, day-long heavy rain continued across the region, triggering flash floods that entered several houses in different parts of the city during the night. Despite it being the time of Iftar, residents remained busy draining floodwater from their homes, while mud houses in various localities were also damaged. The persistent rainfall also caused a significant drop in temperatures, adding to the difficulties faced by residents.
People remained confined to their homes as key roads and streets, including Sir Syed Colony, Mandian, Jinnahabad, Al-Badar Colony, and adjoining areas, remained submerged for hours.
Heavy rain and hailstorm also caused extensive damage to standing wheat crops and fruit orchards across Abbottabad district.
In city areas including Link Road, PMA Road, and Kehal, flooding was exacerbated due to encroachments on natural drainage channels and nullahs, allegedly with the connivance of municipal authorities, resulting in blocked water flow.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Haripur, in view of the prevailing weather conditions, issued a weather alert and directed all relevant departments to remain vigilant. An emergency control room has been established, and citizens have been advised to contact 0995-613389 in case of any emergency.
The Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) has initiated efforts to clear blocked drains and nullahs to restore normalcy.
