"I want to extend my thoughts to the injured, wishing them a speedy recovery," Roberto Gualtieri, mayor of Rome, said.Multiple people were injured after an explosion rocked a residential area in Rome, Italy.
Two buildings in the Piana del Sole area collapsed after the explosion, which occurred around 1 p.m. local time on Sunday, March 22, according to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. The explosion was likely caused by a liquefied petroleum gas cylinder. The investigation is still ongoing. Two elderly individuals, ages 84 and 86, were injured in the explosion, a witness told the outlet. The woman was found under the bathtub, while the man was located near rubble. The pair were transported to the nearby Sant'Eugenio Hospital for medical treatment.Telegrafi reported that the explosion damaged nearby residences, and about 70 people were evacuated from the area. In addition to the two serious injuries, others were reported to be trapped under the rubble. A resident detailed the incident to Corriere della Sera, saying, “We heard a deafening bang coming from the house across from ours: debris struck everything — the large window, my son's car, the gate — everything was destroyed.” “Fortunately, my wife, the dog, and I are fine,” he added. Another witness, who lives near the site of the incident, told the outlet that the explosion "bent the windows in the house."Police, firefighters, and medical workers reported to the scene, per Nova News. Local police are working with the Civil Protection Department to arrange housing assistance for those who were evacuated. Roberto Gualtieri, mayor of Rome, said in a statement, per Nova News, "I want to extend my thoughts to the injured, wishing them a speedy recovery, and I want to thank the firefighters, local police, Civil Protection, and healthcare workers, as well as the City Council and the president, who are all here to offer support and assistance to those in need. We won't leave them alone."The mayor said that the explosion occurred in one building that was "completely destroyed." The surrounding residences, meanwhile, also sustained varying amounts of damage. "These are fairly new buildings, about seven years old, and in good condition," he said.
Gualtieri shared a video on social media of himself on the scene of the incident, writing in the caption, "We are here to ensure all necessary support for the families involved. We will not leave them alone."
