In the 24 hours from 8am on Tuesday to 8am yesterday, 1,248 suspected and 189 confirmed measles cases were reported in Bangladesh, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Dhaka logged the highest number of suspected cases at 505, followed by Rajshahi with 273, Chattogram with 145, Khulna with 118, Barishal with 71, Rangpur with 62, Sylhet with 46, and Mymensingh with 28.
Ten suspected deaths were recorded during the same period, including 6 in Dhaka, 3 in Rajshahi, and 1 in Khulna. No confirmed deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.
Overall, the DGHS reported 11,133 suspected and 1,599 confirmed measles cases nationwide between March 15 and April 8, as infections, deaths, and hospital admissions continued to rise.
According to a DGHS press release, 138 deaths were recorded among suspected measles cases during the period, while 21 were confirmed as measles-related.
Divisional data showed that Rajshahi recorded the highest number of suspected deaths at 61, followed by Dhaka with 57, Chattogram with 10, Khulna with 7, Barishal with 2, and Sylhet with 1. No suspected deaths were reported in Rangpur division.
Among confirmed deaths, Dhaka recorded 9, followed by Barishal with 5, Chattogram with 3, Mymensingh with 2, and Rajshahi with 2. No confirmed deaths were reported in Rangpur, Khulna, or Sylhet divisions.
Hospital data showed that 7,577 suspected measles patients were admitted between March 15 and April 8, of whom 5,241 recovered and were discharged. In the last 24 hours alone, 693 suspected patients were admitted.
Health experts warned that the rising trend calls for urgent, coordinated vaccination and preventive measures to contain the outbreak.
