Immigration procedures at MAG Osmani International Airport are being conducted manually following a fire that damaged critical equipment in the airport’s server room early Monday.
According to the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, the blaze is suspected to have originated from an electrical short circuit. However, authorities have launched a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Officials from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh and immigration police are treating the matter with urgency. CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Mostafa Mahmud Siddiq and Immigration Police DIG Moazzem Hossain separately visited the site on Monday to assess the damage.
Airport Director Hafiz Ahmed confirmed that due to the server outage, incoming passengers are being processed manually. A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight (BG-202) from London, carrying 222 passengers, landed at 8:54 AM and was cleared through manual immigration procedures. Passenger data will be entered into the system once the servers are restored, he added.
Senior Station Officer Kutub Uddin said two fire service units responded to the incident around 12:30 am after receiving reports of the fire, while the airport’s in-house firefighting team had already begun initial containment efforts.
The fire reportedly broke out around 11:45pm on the second floor of the immigration server room, causing extensive damage. An airport source, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggested that poorly managed and tangled wiring may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
The blaze was brought under control within approximately 30 minutes. As the incident occurred after all scheduled flights had departed, airport operations and flight schedules were not disrupted.
Multiple investigations are currently underway as authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage and work toward restoring normal operations.
