A fire that broke out at the Mill Gate (Namapara) slum in Tongi, Gazipur, has been brought under control, leaving at least 40 houses destroyed.
The blaze erupted around 7pm on Monday.
Local residents said they first noticed flames coming from one of the slum houses in the evening, after which the fire rapidly spread to adjacent dwellings within moments.
Md Abdul Mannan, deputy assistant director of Fire Service Dhaka Zone-3, said four units from the Tongi Fire Service rushed to the scene after receiving the alert and brought the fire under control after about an hour of efforts, around 8pm.
He confirmed that approximately 40 houses were gutted in the blaze. However, no casualties were reported.
The Fire Service has yet to determine the cause of the fire or assess the full extent of the damage.
