The death toll from a road crash on the Masaka-Mbarara highway has risen to 11. The accident occurred on Tuesday morning when a passenger bus and a box body truck collided in Lwengo District.
Southern Region Police spokesperson Mr Twaha Kasirye confirmed that three people who had sustained serious injuries died shortly after admission to hospital, raising the number from the original eight, who died on spot.
“Three more people have succumbed to injuries at Lyantonde main hospital. We have only retrieved the name of one single victim identified as Christine Kyomuhangi. The police are also hunting for the bus driver who disappeared shortly after the crash," he said.
The Tuesday early morning road crash involved a passenger bus attached to Kasaba Bus Company and a box body truck at Kalegero village in Lwengo District. The accident also claimed the life of a police officer identified as Ernest Abaho attached to Mukono Central Police according to the crash report released by the Lwengo District traffic department.
Preliminary police findings point to reckless driving as a possible cause of the accident.
The crash brings the number of crash victims to 15 in a space of nearly 3-days in the greater Masaka region since April 4, 2026 according to Police sources.
The other road crashes claimed the lives 2 people in Kalungu District and two others were killed in a road crash in Lyantonde District on April 4 and 5, 2026.
The 2025 crime report released last month (March) shows that 5,383 people lost their lives on Ugandan roads.
