The province has issued a measles exposure alert for those who attended the Rockyview General Hospital emergency room last week.
The warning, issued Tuesday afternoon, concerns anyone who might have been present in the emergency room on April 4 between 10:27 a.m. and 6:17 p.m.
Anyone born in or after 1970 or without two documented measles-containing vaccines or has never been sick with the illness is being asked to monitor for symptoms.
They’re also being urged to take precautions when visiting a health-care facility and to review their immunization records.
Measles symptoms are a cough, red eyes and a runny nose and fever of 38.3 C or higher, along with a rash that appears three to seven days following the onset of fever. The rash usually starts behind the ears or on the face before spreading to the body with a red and blotchy colour on light skin colours.
It appears as purple or darker on darker skin.
Those with symptoms should stay home and call the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434.
If exposed, vaccination within 72 hours can be effective in preventing measles.
