Seven fire crews battled a huge 120-hectare grass fire in Gower on Tuesday. The blaze at Cefn Bryn took nearly seven hours to bring under control as crews dealt with the "physically demanding" incident.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service explained how windy conditions contributed to "unpredictable" fire behaviour as wildfire beaters, blowers, hose reel jets and knapsacks were all used, along with a water bowser. Never miss a Swansea story by signing up to our newsletter here.
A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 10.47am on Tuesday, April 7, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Swansea West, Gorseinon, Morriston, Llanelli, Reynoldston, Port Talbot and Pontarddulais fire stations were called to an incident at Cefn Bryn in Gower.
"Crews responded to a fire involving approximately 120 hectares of grassland. Crews utilised wildfire beaters, blowers and knapsacks, plus hose reel jets to control and extinguish the fire. Crews were supported by the attendance of the water bowser appliance from Port Talbot fire station."
The spokesman added: "The incident proved especially challenging for crews as windy conditions impeded progress and contributed to unpredictable fire behaviour, while warm weather and the protracted duration of the incident increased the physical demands on firefighters. The final crews left the scene at 5.32pm."
The fire service has used the incident as a reminder of its advice on wildfires. It said: "At this time of year grass and mountainsides can dry out quickly.
"Even a small spark - accidental or deliberate - can escalate into a fast‑moving fire capable of destroying habitats, landscapes, and homes within minutes.
"The Wales Wildfire Board are urging everyone to be wildfire wise by following our simple, practical safety advice. A small amount of extra care can make a huge difference, helping to protect our stunning countryside and keeping communities safe from the devastating impact of wildfire.
"In 2025 fire services across Wales attended 3,474 grass fire incidents - a 275% increase on the previous year. Most concerning of all, deliberate grass fires rose to 2,357 incidents, an increase of 1,694 fires (up 256%), which represents the highest number of grass fires since 2018.
