The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says a 150-hectare, out-of-control wildfire is scorching land southeast of Merritt.
The blaze was discovered on Wednesday and is suspected to be human-caused.
No evacuations have been ordered.
The fire is just east of the Lundbom Lake Recreation Site off the Okanagan Connector, more than 20 kilometres away from the city.
The BCWS says that 18 firefighters are on scene.
“It is in an area that is pretty grassy, so there is quite a bit of smoke, but nothing is threatened,” a spokesperson told 1130 NewsRadio.
The Lower Nicola Indian Band says it is monitoring the situation as well.
Also Wednesday, the Merritt Fire Rescue Department is conducting a prescribed burn in the north of the city.
“Anticipate the presence of smoke in the Mountain Drive area,” the department said in a written statement.
“Firefighters will be on-site starting at 9 am, remaining throughout the day and conducting patrols into the evening.”
