At least three people were killed after flooding struck a gold mining site in northeastern Afghanistan, Taliban officials said on Friday, raising concerns that the death toll could rise.
The incident occurred in the Shahr-e-Bozorg district of Badakhshan, where water surged into a gold extraction site, according to a statement from the Taliban police command.
Among the victims were a father and his son, both residents of nearby Yawan district, the statement said.
Taliban officials said the flooding happened late Friday morning, trapping workers inside the mine. More than 100 people were reportedly working at the site at the time of the incident, and some may still be missing.
Abdul Rashid Rashad, the Taliban district governor, said the exact number of people still at the mine remained unclear, and search and rescue efforts were ongoing.
He warned that the casualty toll could increase as teams continue to search for those possibly trapped under water and debris.
Mining accidents are relatively common in Afghanistan, where many sites operate with limited regulation and safety standards. The lack of standardized standard practices has frequently contributed to deadly incidents in different parts of the country.
