Two people are dead after the crane basket they were using to do work on the facade of a building in Palermo fell from the height of the 10th floor on Friday, sources said.
The basket fell onto the roof of a tyre centre below and one of the centre's employees was injured.
Workplace deaths are a major problem in Italy and Premier Giorgia Meloni's government has said boosting health and safety is a priority.
In November the cabinet launched a digital badge for contractors and sub-contractors on construction sites, aimed at improving safety.
Trade unions say an average of three workers a day die in workplace accidents in Italy.
