A deadly road accident claimed five lives early Friday morning near Botevgrad, after a car collided head-on with a truck at around 7:30 a.m. The crash occurred near the junction on the main road I-1, with initial reports indicating that the car had entered the opposite lane for reasons that remain unclear. All five victims were traveling in the vehicle and died at the scene.Information about the incident was also confirmed by Diana Rusinova from the European Center for Transport Policies, who drew attention to the severity of the crash. According to available details, ?the collision was head-on between a truck and a passenger car,? leaving no survivors among those inside the car.
Traffic in the area was immediately disrupted following the accident. Authorities temporarily closed or restricted movement in both directions, while introducing detours to ease congestion. Passenger vehicles heading toward Sofia were redirected along the II-16 route between Sofia and Rebarkovo, while those traveling toward Vratsa were diverted through Botevgrad, Skravena, and Novachene. Heavy trucks bound for the capital were held on site, as ?traffic is being regulated by Traffic Police teams,? according to official information.
The incident comes at a time of expected heavy travel across the country. Around the holidays of May 1 and St. George's Day (May 6th), authorities anticipate a sharp rise in road traffic, with forecasts suggesting up to 1.7 million vehicles per day across the national road network. Data also indicates that approximately 111,000 vehicles are expected to leave Sofia over the series of long weekends.
