An earthquake of 5.2 magnitude was widely felt in the Reno and Lake Tahoe areas Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The quake, at 1:17 a.m. was centered near Lahontan Reservoir, about 40 miles east of Carson City. It was preceded by a 4.3 earthquake in the same area about a minute earlier and followed by several around 2.5 magnitude, the USGS said.More than 1,600 people responded to the USGS Did You Feel It survey, including from as far west as Sacramento.A quake of 5.7 magnitude was centered in the Lahontan area on April 13, and dozens of quakes of magnitude 2 and 3 have been recorded there since.Before that, the largest earthquakes in Nevada were another 5.7, in December 2024 about 10 miles south of Friday’s epicenter, and a 6.5 in May 2020 near Tonopah, according to the USGS database. The 6.5 was the state’s biggest quake in 66 years.
