Eighteen tonnes of peanuts in shell from Egypt will not reach the Bulgarian market due to dangerously high levels of mould contamination, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency said on Sunday. Inspectors from the Varna Regional Food Safety Directorate found that the peanuts contained aflatoxin levels three to five times above the permissible levels. Aflatoxins are highly toxic and carcinogenic compounds produced by certain fungi that develop in nuts and crops when they are improperly stored, usually in warm and humid regions. The samples were analyzed at the Central Laboratory for Chemical Testing and Control in Sofia. The highest exceedance was recorded for aflatoxin B1, which is a proven carcinogen. Experts warn that even prolonged exposure to small amounts increases the risk of liver cancer. Aflatoxins are not destroyed by roasting or boiling, making them particularly dangerous. The container carrying the peanuts has been detained at customs. The importer has the right to request a follow-up test. If the initial results are confirmed, they can choose between three options: returning the shipment to Egypt, destroying it, or subjecting it to special treatment outside Bulgaria to reduce the aflatoxin levels.
