Extreme rainfall

Two people were killed and 11 others injured in rain-related incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority said on Monday. The casualties occurred as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms affected multiple districts, causing damage to homes and infrastructure. The situation matters because ongoing unstable weather continues to pose risks to vulnerable communities across the province.
According to the PDMA report, two deaths were reported in Mardan during rain-related incidents overnight. In addition, four people were injured in Battagram, six in Swat, and one in Mardan. Authorities also confirmed significant damage to residential structures in several districts due to strong winds and rain.
The report stated that four houses were completely destroyed, including one in Battagram and three in Shangla. Moreover, 27 houses were partially damaged across Shangla, Swat, Torghar, Upper Dir, and Mardan. A school building in Shangla also suffered damage due to the adverse weather conditions. Officials said emergency response teams were monitoring affected areas.
Rainfall data showed Kalam received the highest rainfall at 12 millimeters in the past 24 hours. Chitral recorded 11 millimeters, while Malam Jabba received 8 millimeters of rain. Other areas, including Saidu Sharif, Balakot, and Mardan, also experienced varying levels of rainfall. The Pakistan Meteorological Department said a westerly weather system was affecting upper regions of the country.
The Met Office forecast dust storms, thunderstorms, and intermittent rain in northern and central regions until May 23. It warned that strong winds and lightning could damage weak structures such as electric poles and billboards. Farmers were advised to plan agricultural activities carefully during the unsettled weather period. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as further rainfall is expected.
