Methodist Hospital in South Philadelphia evacuated patients overnight after flooding led to power outages at the medical facility, officials said.
Speaking to NBC10 early Wednesday, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said the evacuation happened after flooding in the basement of the medical facility led to power outages that began at about 6 p.m. on Tuesday night.
Small said an investigation is ongoing into the cause of the flooding -- which, may have been weather-related -- but about three feet of water pooled in the basement of the hospital, causing an outage when backup generators failed.
In response, Small said, over 100 patients have been evacuated and transported to other facilities.
And, he said, the hospital will likely be closed for days, if not weeks, in order to deal with this situation. The ER was open for walk-in patients for a period of time on Wednesday morning, but it has since closed once again.
