A technical failure at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) generation system caused a widespread power outage on Thursday morning, briefly leaving parts of the island without electricity.
The problem was traced to a unit at the Vasilikos power station, one of the country’s main electricity generation sites. The fault triggered a sudden drop in power production at 8:16 a.m., leading to automatic load shedding systems kicking in to protect the wider network.
As a result, several areas were affected, including parts of Engomi and Strovolos, Anthoupoli, Archangelos, Lakatamia, the Chryseleousa area, and Agioi Trimithias.
The EAC said its teams worked quickly to manage the issue and gradually restore supply across most affected areas. By later in the morning, electricity had returned almost everywhere, with the exception of one line in the area of Protaras, which is popular with tourists.
During the disruption, the authority’s call center also faced heavy pressure, with a spike in incoming calls leading to delays. The EAC urged the public to try again later as staff worked through the backlog.
