An explosion has occurred at MOL Group’s plant in Tiszaújváros, Hungary. One person has died, and several others have been seriously injured. Energy Minister István Kapitány is on his way to the scene together with Zsolt Hernádi, Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced on Facebook on Friday morning.
In a Facebook post, Tiszaújvárosi Krónika informed residents that, according to preliminary information, the explosion involved a pyro-gasoline pipeline on the premises of MOL Petrolkémia Zrt. According to the disaster management authority, the explosion does not pose a threat to the local population, the post said. The photos attached to the post show thick black smoke.
Dávid Dojcsák, spokesperson for disaster management in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, told MTI that firefighting is ongoing and a mobile laboratory has been dispatched to the site.
MOL’s Tiszaújváros petrochemical complex includes integrated olefin production (ethylene and propylene), downstream plastics manufacturing (polyethene and polypropylene), a synthetic rubber facility, and a polyol plant inaugurated in 2024.
