A major power outage hit parts of Gurugram on Friday after the main transformer of a power substation in Sector 72 caught fire, disrupting electricity supply across several parts of the city and affecting Rapid Metro services for more than an hour.
The transformer failure led to the shutdown of seven major power substations, triggering widespread outages in residential and commercial areas from Sector 38 to Sector 57, along with parts of Sector 15 and Sector 18. According to officials, the affected substations include Sector 15, 38, 44, 46, 52, 56 and Maruti 66 KVA power stations.
The outage also impacted the Rapid Metro Gurgaon network, with services remaining disrupted for over an hour. Thousands of commuters who rely on the metro daily faced inconvenience during peak evening hours as trains were halted due to the power failure.
A video recorded by a passenger showed a group of people, who were stranded on a Rapid Metro train, walking on the viaduct to reach the station.
The Rapid Metro spans a total of 12.85 kilometres and has 11 stations. It links between Sikanderpur (Yellow Line interchange with Delhi Metro) and Sector 55-56.
Officials said repair work on the damaged transformer was underway, but restoring the power system could take between eight and 10 hours.
