An Air India plane made an emergency landing on Thursday, May 21 after the crew suspected an engine fire.
Air India Flight 2802, Airbus A320 carrying 171 passengers, declared a “full emergency” after the crew received an alert indicating a possible engine fire, the airline told The Independent. The fire warning was later confirmed as genuine and the crew carried out an emergency landing in Delhi, its intended destination.
“Air India is immediately initiating a full investigation into the cause of the incident in coordination with the relevant regulatory authorities,” the airline said in its statement.
The engine fire marked the second safety incident involving an Air India plane that day. Just hours before, another Air India flight was grounded following a tail strike at Bengaluru Airport.
The airline confirmed the separate incident to The Independent as well, saying the plane “experienced a tail strike during landing” and came to a stop safely.
A tail strike occurs when the airframe at the rear of the aircraft comes in contact with the runway during takeoff or landing.
According to NDTV, a Boeing 747 aircraft had taken off just before the Air India flight was preparing to land, creating strong turbulence. The Air India flight's pilots likely encountered unstable landing conditions and completed a go-around to land the plane.
Air India did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment on either incident.
