A daylight shooting in Chandigarh left a 45-year-old man dead after armed assailants opened fire inside a medical store on Saturday afternoon. The deceased, identified as Jaanki Dass, worked as a cashier at a medical shop.
According to Chandigarh Police, the attack took place at around 2:30 pm when three suspects arrived at the market complex, where the store was located, on a motorcycle. Two of them, wearing masks and carrying guns, entered the store while the third remained outside.
Eyewitnesses and preliminary police investigations suggest that the gunmen walked straight to the counter and opened fire on Jaanki Dass from an extremely close range. Multiple rounds were fired in quick succession, leaving the cashier critically injured. He was rushed to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Two other persons are also reported to have suffered injuries during the firing incident.
'ALL ANGLES ARE BEING PROBED'
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sumer Partap Singh confirmed the death and said police are investigating the case from all possible angles. "Two masked persons came around 2:30 pm and opened fire on Jaanki Dass. The victim has expired. A total of 13 rounds were fired. Three suspects were involved in the incident. We have not received any evidence of an extortion call so far, but all angles are being probed," the SSP said.
Following the attack, the accused fled the scene on their motorcycle. Police teams, including officers from the Crime Branch, rushed to the spot and launched a massive search operation. Nakabandi has been imposed across Chandigarh, and investigators are examining CCTV footage from the medical store and nearby locations to identify and trace the suspects.
OLD RIVALRY ANGLE BEING INVESTIGATED
Sources said the owner of the medical store had reportedly received threat calls in the past. In 2017, two youths had allegedly fired shots in the air outside Kumar Brothers Medicos, though no injuries were reported at that time.
Police are now investigating whether the latest attack was linked to an old rivalry, targeted violence, or an extortion-related motive. The investigation is ongoing.
