Heavy rains swept across several Russian regions over the past weekend. Parts of Moscow received nearly half their monthly rainfall in a single storm that toppled trees, flooded Novy Arbat, Kutuzovsky Prospekt, and other streets, along with underground parking garages and the Leningradsky railway station. In the Zyuzino district, a resident on a paddleboard helped drivers out of their cars, with water reaching the middle of the doors, according to media reports. In the Moscow suburb of Mytishchi, water partially submerged an overpass.
Krasnodar has been under water since June 12, with heavy rains falling for two straight days. Floodwaters blocked traffic on some streets. Local media published videos of residents paddling down streets on paddleboards and children swimming in puddles, while basements flooded throughout the city. On the morning of June 14, a state of emergency was declared in several villages in the Krymsky district of Krasnodar Krai after a dam breach (that occurred on June 3). Regional authorities reported that municipal services in Krasnodar, Labinsk, and the Kalininsky district were pumping water from flooded areas. In total, 108 residential yards and the basements of 84 apartment buildings were flooded across those districts.
The Chelyabinsk city administration stated that “no existing storm drain system could handle rainfall of such intensity.” Streets flooded, and water pooled on the floors of buses. Residents told local journalists that cars were “sinking badly” and that traffic across the city was severely disrupted. Drivers lost their license plates in the rushing water.
In the Sverdlovsk Region, heavy rainfall caused water to overflow a dam on the Shaitanka River in the village of Shilovka, flooding 30 residential areas. Four homes were damaged in the village of Nikolo-Pavlovskoye. The regional Emergency Situations Ministry advised residents to find shelter, seal their doors and windows tightly, and remain indoors as a storm bore down on the city.
A thunderstorm on June 13 left 2,600 residents of the Novgorod Region without electricity.
