A fire aboard a Hingham/Hull MBTA ferry prompted the evacuation of 25 passengers onto a South Boston island Monday afternoon, the T said.
“The MBTA apologizes to passengers onboard this ferry trip today,” a spokesperson for the MBTA said to Boston.com.
At around 2:30 p.m., a fire broke out inside the machinery section of the Champion MBTA ferry, the TA said.
The boat was running a 2 p.m. trip from Hingham to Long Wharf when the fire was discovered, the agency said.
“The flames were immediately extinguished as quickly as possible,” the MBTA wrote.
Twenty-five passengers were evacuated onto Castle Island, where an MBTA bus picked them up and brought them to Aquarium/Long Wharf station, the spokesperson for the MBTA said.
The US Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the fire. The Champion has since been towed away from Castle Island, the MBTA said.
“There are no other canceled Hingham/Hull ferry trips today– other vessels will supplement the route for the remainder of the day,” the agency said.
