On Friday morning, July 3, a violent fire broke out at the wooden church in the village of Posta, Remetea Chioarului commune, Maramureș County, dating back to 1675 and dedicated to 'Saint Elijah'.
The alarm was raised around 4:00 AM, and firefighting crews were dispatched to the scene. Upon their arrival, the fire had spread over an area of approximately 200 square meters, engulfing the entire church and the 25-meter high steeple, which was at risk of collapsing.
The firefighters mobilized three fire engines, a ladder truck, SMURD teams, and a water supply tanker. The intervention was hampered by the wooden structure of the church, and authorities have not yet announced the cause of the fire or the extent of the damages.
The church, an important historical monument, represented a valuable example of traditional architecture from the Chioar Country, and the fire represents a significant loss for the local cultural heritage. An investigation will determine the causes of the fire and the extent of the damages.
