A chaotic scene in downtown Albuquerque leaves a person dead and multiple people injured Friday night, makes for the seventh police shooting involving the Albuquerque Police Department so far this year.
Stephen Griego, 41, was shot and killed late last night in downtown Albuquerque. APD Chief Cecily Barker said extra officers patrol the area on weekends as part of their Downtown Tactical Plan. “They heard a shot fired in the area of 3rd and Central. When they responded to that area, they saw two individuals who seemed to be in some type of altercation. One of those individuals was believed to be armed,” said Cecily Barker.
Griego, who had racked up thousands of views on TikTok by live-streaming Albuquerque nightlife, was filmed last night by a witness moments before an altercation between Griego and another man broke out.
A video on social media shows Griego standing on a scooter when he was approached by a man who pushed him.
The person filming asked Griego, “Can you do tricks on that scooter?”
He shook his head no, then said, “You gotta watch out for those two,” as he points in front of him.
A man off camera said, “What do you mean? What out for who?”
“You,” Griego replied.
A man swiftly approached Griego, asking, “Who me?”
To which Griego replied, “Yeah, you two.”
That’s when the man tried to slap and push Griego, who then ran to the other side of a barricade. A separate video showed two men approaching him and Griego shooting towards one of them. Less than twenty seconds later, the cameraman is running away, but you begin to hear at least 11 gunshots. It was when the police got involved.
APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said in a statement that four officers ran towards the gunfire and shot at Griego several times. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Gallegos also wrote that the man involved in the confrontation was shot once, and investigators are still determining whether it was by Griego or an officer. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
“It was a very chaotic scene, and we are still trying to talk to people who might have witnessed it, and we encourage you, if you saw anything or if you have any video, to please get that to police officers.”
Barker added that the number to call is 242-COPS, and there will be a link put out to upload videos.
Gallegos said a bystander was also shot about a block away, possibly by a stray bullet. Police are working to determine who fired that round. That victim’s injuries are also not considered to be life-threatening
Out of the seven officer-involved-shootings in Albuquerque this year, last night’s was the fifth to turn deadly. Gallegos said Internal Affairs will investigate whether officers followed department policies. The findings will then be sent to the Superintendent of Police Reform, who will determine whether disciplinary action is needed.
