A commercial cargo ship came under sudden attack off the coast of Yemen on Sunday, triggering an emergency distress signal that has put regional maritime authorities on high alert.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center reported that the vessel sent out the alert roughly 30 nautical miles southwest of the critical, Houthi-controlled port city of Al Hudaydah (Hodeidah). According to the brief transmission shared by the agency on the social media platform X, the cargo vessel stated it was actively being targeted by "unknown armed assailants," News.Az reports, citing Anadolu Agency.
Naval and security authorities have launched an immediate investigation into the incident. While no group has officially claimed responsibility for the ambush, the area has seen a history of tension involving Yemen's Houthi rebels—who recently threatened to resume maritime strikes—as well as highly opportunistic Somali pirates operating out of the nearby Gulf of Aden.
The UKMTO has urged all merchant vessels navigating through the Red Sea corridors to maintain extreme caution, keep a sharp lookout, and immediately report any suspicious behavior or unidentified crafts approaching their positions.
