Four people were wounded in a knife attack in Saiki City, Oita Prefecture, on Monday morning, according to local media reports. Public broadcaster NHK said police alerted emergency services shortly after 9.30am local time following reports that individuals had been stabbed with a kitchen knife in the car park of a retail premises in the southwestern Japanese city.
Officers confirmed that four victims sustained injuries and were taken to hospital. All were conscious at the time of transport.
A 44‑year‑old man was detained at a nearby medical facility on suspicion of breaching Japan’s firearms and swords control legislation. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
