A salmonella outbreak that has sickened dozens of Suffolk County residents in New York is under investigation by the county's Department of Health Services.
A total of 58 patients have been seen by Stony Brook Southampton Hospital doctors while exhibiting symptoms consistent with salmonella infection since the beginning of July, according to hospital officials.
The illnesses began following a June 30 meal following a funeral, with some suspected connections to leftover catering from a music festival held on the territory days prior.
"The majority of the patients were evaluated, treated and discharged. As required, SBSH promptly notified the New York State Department of Health to support its public health investigation," officials said in a statement.
The Suffolk County Department of Health Services "is involved in collecting information on a salmonella outbreak on the East End of Long Island," health officials said in a statement.
