At least 12 people were injured this Monday after a tourist boat caught fire while sailing off the coast of Bayahibe near Saona Island in La Altagracia province, authorities said.Preliminary reports indicate that more than 30 people, including tourists and crew members, were on board the vessel when the fire broke out. The crew included the captain, a tour guide, and a sailor.Emergency responders rescued all occupants and transferred the injured to nearby medical facilities. Twelve passengers suffered burns, with 11 hospitalized at regional health centers and one transferred to a private clinic for specialized treatment. Victims were taken to facilities including the Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia General and Specialty Hospital (HGELNA), the Central Romana Medical Center, and Canela Clinic in La Romana.
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the fire or disclosed whether evacuation procedures were required before the blaze was brought under control. Emergency personnel remained at the scene throughout the day, assisting passengers, gathering evidence, and coordinating the investigation.Bayahibe is one of the Dominican Republic’s leading tourist destinations and serves as the main departure point for excursions to Saona Island and other attractions within Cotubanamá National Park.
