One person was killed and two others were critically injured in a shooting at a funeral outside a church in Kearns, Utah, according to police. The shooting led to a lockdown for nearby schools.
The incident happened at about 11:25 a.m. Monday outside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 5015 South 4460 West, according to Unified Police spokesperson Justin Hoyal. Officers had been sent to the church after receiving calls from people planning to attend the funeral who said there could be a problem.
Officers heard shots on the south side of the building and found one victim in the road with critical injuries. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
While officers were treating the first victim, they saw a second victim being carried to a vehicle in the church parking lot. The vehicle fled when officers tried to stop it, but police boxed it in a short distance away near 4700 South and 4000 West.
The second victim was found inside the vehicle with critical injuries and taken to a hospital. A third victim, who was also critically injured, was found outside the church and taken to a hospital.
Police believe all three victims are male and that all of the injuries were caused by gunfire. No officers fired their weapons.
Investigators believe they may have everyone involved in the shooting, but no arrests have been announced. Police are investigating whether gang involvement played a role.
West Kearns Elementary School, which is next to the church, was placed on lockdown as a precaution.
