An American hiker from Kansas was struck by lightning and killed while climbing Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy, according to media reports.
The incident happened Sunday night as thunderstorms moved over the volcano. The 29-year-old man from Kansas was climbing through a restricted area when he was struck, according to Italian news agency ANSA and the Associated Press.
Rescue workers reached the hiker at about 8 p.m., when he was already in serious condition. He was taken to Cannizzaro Hospital in the nearby city of Catania but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The man’s identity was not immediately released.
Mount Etna, on the eastern coast of Sicily, is Europe’s tallest active volcano. Recent eruptions have drawn large numbers of tourists and hikers to the area, though access restrictions are often imposed around the volcano because of volcanic activity and rapidly changing weather conditions.
