Volcanic eruption

Mount Ile Lewotolok activity in Lembata Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, is still high. In five days, 1-5 September 2026, 1,873 earthquakes or eruptions were recorded, while eruptions still occurred until Sunday evening.
Ile Lewotolok Volcano Observatory Stanislaus Arakian said during this period the height of the eruption column reached 200-700 meters from the peak.
"The column of ash from the eruption is white, gray to black," Stanislaus said in a report on the observation of Mount Ile Lewotolok for the period 1-5 September 2026 as quoted by Antara, Sunday, September 6.
In addition to the eruption, officers recorded the discharge of material with a glide distance of up to 700 meters from the peak to the southeast.
Smoke from the main crater was observed to be white with thin to thick intensity. The height ranges from 20-500 meters from the peak.
The seismic activity is also quite high. In addition to 1,873 eruption earthquakes, 663 blow-out earthquakes, 221 non-harmonic tremors, and 14 harmonic earthquakes were recorded.
Tremor is a vibration that lasts relatively continuously and can be related to fluid or gas movement inside the volcano.
Officers also recorded six hybrid or multiple phase earthquakes, four shallow volcanic earthquakes, six deep volcanic earthquakes, and three distant tectonic earthquakes.
On Sunday at 06.41 WITA, Ile Lewotolok erupted again with an ash column reaching 600 meters from the peak.
Stanislaus also responded to an eruption video circulating on social media and appeared to show a fairly high eruption.
"What is circulating on social media was taken in the crater by a guide. That's why it looks high," he said.
Until 21.45 WITA, the eruption activity was still ongoing. The last eruption was recorded at 21.35 WITA with an ash column of less than 500 meters above the peak or about 1,923 meters above sea level.
