The Surrey Fire Service says 16 people have been displaced after a structure fire in the city’s Whalley neighbourhood Sunday afternoon.
Asst. Fire Chief Mike McNamara says when crews were called to the home, located on 125B Street near 104 Avenue, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the roof and side of the house.
He says five of the 16 residents were initially unaccounted for. After crews got confirmation from the landlord that everyone was out, firefighters were able to start attacking the blaze from outside.
The home’s clay roof collapsed due to water, according to McNamara.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation. The Surrey Police Service tells CityNews it does not appear to have been suspicious. No injuries have been reported.
